Subject: Lunar Prospector Heard in Texas

Hi Folks

I was able to locate the Lunar Prospector on 2272.998 tonite. The signal was 5 to 10 dB over noise, a steady carrier. Approximate az and elevation are as follows for Jan 8, 1998

0500 UTC el=82, az=180
0510 UTC el=81, az=192
0536 UTC el=77, az=223
0552 UTC el=75, az=235

The moon was visible in the southwest sky and I assume the Prospector was about a quarter way to the moon at about 60,000 miles??

Anybody know how to get a SWL report to NASA?

thanks

From: CT1DMK

Lunar Prospector was heard 6 to 10 dB above noise (main carrier) on 2273.0 +/- dopler. Subcarrier 0 to 4 dB above noise on 2274.02 +/- dopler ( both s/n's at 2.3KHz bandwidth).

Occultation noticed today 18Jan, from 01:40utc to 02:30utc (aproximated times).

Equipment was: Antena 5.6m dish underiluminated (down to 4m) by an helix feed. HB converter at feed, NF=0.9 dB aprox. (MGF1303). IF= 192MHz Second conversion to 28.0 MHz, Final rig TS850.

Hello John K3PGP

I am a subscriber of moon-net and interesting on moonbounce. Recently I was interested in your report and web-page on the lunar prospector.

I am happy to report you my success on receiving the lunar prospector on 2273 and 2274 MHz.

I heard the signal of the lunar prospector at 21:13 until 23:25 on 21st Jan, during those period I lost the satellite during 22:03-22:52 probably due to an occultation. S/N of 2273MHz carrier was 10-15dB over 100Hz BW noise(?) according to AF9Y DSP software and S/N on 2274MHz subcarrier was 3-5dB as same.

My equipments are homemade 20ft dish, modified S band TV converter,144MHz converter and 28MHz receiver,TS830S and TS690V (for reception of subcarrier). As I used the TX port of the 13cm EME system (RHCP), I should persevere the 4dB loss of the transmission cable. Namely my receiver NF is supposed approximately 5-6 dB.

I thank Al WB5LUA,John K3PGP and Louis CT1DMK for their excitation and kind advise.

Hello John,

I send You information about my receivering Lunar Prospector.

Equipment was:

Antenna: 10 m dish f/D 0.26 system Cassegrain, feed is pyramidal horn with Septum polarizer, RHC

RX: 1 preamp. ATF36077 NF=0,5 dB (WB5LUA design) + 2 preamp ATF 36077 + converter Down East Microwave (LO 2160 MHz) + AR3000A IF 113 and 114 MHz

Lunar Prospector was heard 6March 98 between 16,30 - 17,30 UT 12-14 dB above noise (main carrier) on 2273 MHz, subcarrier on 2274+- 6 dB (on top) both 2,4 KHz bandwith.

I thank You for information on Your web site.

Dear John,

I have followed this story with much interest and was very pleased that you passed the information on to everyone. I attempted to put a system together back in 1975? to catch the ALSEP? package but never did. I now have a 10 ft dish for EME on the higher bands and tonight I put the 2304 feed and EME RX 0.4 dB NF with reversed polarity on the moon and tuned down to 113 MHz on the IF to hear nothing for about 20 minutes. Then of course it popped up very strong aboiut 3 S units above noise on an R700 Rx with 2.1 KHz BW. The subcarrier is also plainly audible with peaks about S1 above noise.

I wonder has anyone listened for the uplink on 2093? Can you tell me what to expect signal characteristic wise? TX & Dish? Polarization?

Your WEB page is very nicely done. Enjoy reading about some of the optical items.

Best 73 & Tnx

hello john
after reading the moon prospector rx-reports in your nice web-page
i put up also some equipment to here the signals.

my dish is 5m for eme on 23 and 13 cm so i put the 13cm imu-feed with polarizer into the dish to rhcp my receiver is: 2-stage preamp with ne324, modifid converter to 113mhz if then ie500 mixer to 33mhz into my ts690 transceiver

i can here the main carrier with 10 to15 db over noise, the datachannels 1020 and1030khz up and down with 5db next time i will look at the uplink ,report follows.
